Last update:

A new wave of young and millennial parents are now adopting smart technology for their infants. This new advancement in parenting has turned nurseries into connected data centres. There are products including digital nannies, smart clothing and more for the well-being of babies dedicated to modern parents.

In an attempt to digitise baby monitoring, Pampers, a brand belonging to Procter & Gamble has come up with a new smart sensor that can be attached to baby’s diaper. It is an initiative by Verily owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet. The product uses sensors, software and video surveillance to monitor babies.

Alters when to change nappy

Dubbed as Lumi by Pampers, it bundles two packs of nappies that are reusable. The sensor can be detached from these nappies’ adhesive patch. It is meant to alert parents about when to change the baby’s nappy. Also, parents can get to know when the baby is sleeping and create an activity chart.

Pampers’ smart diaper system has teamed up with Logitech for a video monitor. The 1080p wide-angle HD video monitor comes with support for night vision. These specially-designed nappies can be work for babies weighing between 7kg and 18kg.

Works with a functional app

This smart diaper system works along with Lumi by Pampers app compatible with Android and iOS. With this app, parents and guardians can track the activity of the babies including sleep pattern and feeding routine.

The app will also be able to track the room temperature and humidity in the air. These details can be tracked with the app, which is useful. Apart from these, the Lumi by Pampers app is designed to display data in a daily or weekly format so that the data can be shared with the paediatrician.

Other initiatives by Verily

Notably, Verily is a product of Google X, a unit of Alphabet. Founded in 2015, this company develops tools and software platforms that collect healthcare information across various settings. Recently, Verily partnered with Johnson & Johnson to bring about innovation in the field of robotic surgery. Also, the company opened an opioid addiction treatment centre.

Launching this fall!

Pampers will launch the Lumi smart diaper system in the U.S. this fall. As of now, there is no word regarding the cost of the same. The availability of this smart diaper system in the European market in not known for now and we can expect the same to be announced soon. We will leave an update as soon as more details are out.
