Increasing the usage of electric vehicles has been recommended as a possible method to decrease fuel consumption in a bid to mitigate the causes of climate change. While a lot of car manufacturers are investing in electric cars lately, Tesla has been the brand closely associated with EVs for a long time now.
Gigafactory in Germany?
In the latest development, Tesla is reportedly looking at northwest Germany ( North Rhine-Westphalia) for a new European factory. The news regarding the European factory was reported by Rheinische Post, a local German newspaper.
Furthermore, the report suggests that the first inspections of a possible location have already taken place as well.
It’s worth mentioning that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said “Germany is a leading choice for Europe. Perhaps on the German-French border makes sense, near the Benelux countries.”
If everything goes according to the plan, the German facility would be Tesla’s fourth Gigafactory globally.
Gigafactory 3!
Notably, Elon Musk’s company secured a 212.5-acre plot of land for it’s Chinese Gigafactory 3 near Shanghai last October. Gigafactory 3 is an important milestone for Tesla, considering that China represents the world’s largest auto market.
Moreover, the company plans to produce affordable versions of the Model 3 and Model Y in the Shanghai-based facility. With this move, Tesla can compete against local electric car manufacturers as well.
LG Chem is the battery partner!
On the other hand, Tesla appears to have found its battery supplier and its none other than South Korea’s LG Chem. To be precise, LG will be supplying the 2170 cells used by Tesla’s Model 3 and eventually, the Model Y. Having said that, the company has contracts with automakers like General Motors and Volvo as well.
