These 27 Dutch startups definitely deserve your attention in 2019

The Netherlands is one of the thriving startup ecosystems in Europe. With many tech startups being born in the country, there are several competitions that are held to motivate them.

One of these is the Academic Startup Competition, which challenges scientific institutions and universities to nominate their best spin-off startups. These companies will race for the 10 Dutch Pioneering Innovations from science. Academic Startup Competition is an initiative of StartupDelta, VSNU and the Netherlands Academy of Technology and Innovation (AcTI).

Academic Startup Competition 2019

During the Academic Startup Competition 2019, the selection day will be held on May 14 at Epicenter in Amsterdam. Later, the 10 best academic startups will get a chance to present themselves to the global audience at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) 2019 on June 4 and 5 in The Hague.

The Jury

The startups will get a chance to present their company to the jury consisting of Betsy Lindsey, director of investor relations HighTechXL, Kees de Koning, SB Innovation Quarter, Dennis Schipper, managing director Demcon Margot Weijnen, professor at TU Delft, Emile Aarts, Jos Nelissen, founder Newtricious, Eline Vrijland, Founder NightBalance Alberto Prado, Philip Healthworks and Fiona Maclaughlin, Director INKEF Capital.

Speakers at the event

Constantijn Van Oranje, the Startup Delta Special Envoy and Pieter Duisenberg, Chairman at VSNU will be the speakers at the Academic Startup Competition 2019. Also, Ulrich starke, the co-founder of zero-emission fuels and Katja berkhout, the international director at StartupDelta will be the moderators.

27 startup nominees

This year, 27 startups in the Netherlands have been nominated for Academic Startup Competition 2019 across categories such as energy, food/agri, connectivity and health. These nominated startups will gain the international spotlight.

Jorrit Kuipers, board AcTI said, “Academic startups the Netherlands are very important because of their often innovative breakthroughs that have global impact in many ways on society. But knowledge alone is not enough, you also have an entrepreneurial drive and the need to market this knowledge. The selected startups are all great examples of how science and entrepreneurship can be mutually reinforcing and evidence that Dutch universities beautiful (deep-) production technology enterprises.”
