I’m sure a lot of people use the ride-hailing app, Uber, and are familiar with how the app works. The ride-hailing app requires a solidly built map stack that provides services like routing, navigation instructions, and estimated time arrival (ETA) calculation.
However, if there is even a slight error in the map data, it can significantly impact services which would simply lead to poor user experience. Hence, to provide a seamless service, all of Uber’s mapping technology needs to be the best it can be.
TomTom joins Uber
So, in the recent development, TomTom, the location technology specialist, and Uber have teamed up to continue integrating TomTom’s maps, traffic data, and maps APIs across Uber’s global platform.
“Accurate mapping is at the heart of Uber’s platform. Our partnership will help create even more dynamic mapping experiences in our global marketplace,” said Michael Weiss-Malik, director of product, maps, and GSS at Uber.
Besides, Uber will serve as a trusted map editing partner to TomTom, leading to even more accurate navigation and location experiences, routing, fares, and arrival time estimates. This will benefit customers, drivers, and delivery executives on Uber’s platform.
Uber’s integration of TomTom’s data and maps APIs will ensure a seamless mapping experience in Uber apps across more than 10,000 cities around the world.
The ride-hailing app will observe and report on-the-ground insights from completed trips and deliveries; TomTom will use updates collected from its partners to provide even more accurate map data to TomTom customers.
“TomTom’s full suite of industry-leading datasets and services, including highly accurate maps, traffic, and maps APIs, will help any company to enhance their location-enabled solutions,” said Anders Truelsen, MD, TomTom Enterprise.
About TomTom
Amsterdam-based TomTom was founded in 1991 by Corinne Vigreux and Peter Frans Pauwels. TomTom is a digital mapping and routing company that focuses on car navigation. They aim to gain a competitive advantage through superior products, a leading brand, and a flexible production structure.
The company delivers better maps through a combination of its high-quality map database that is continuously kept up to date through input from their extensive fleet of surveying vehicles and their large community of users.
TomTom regularly processes close to 2 billion map changes per month, which helps it maintain the freshest maps.
It’s estimated that 10% of the global road network changes every year. TomTom partners with logistics companies and on-demand industries to share the map editing process to provide real-road conditions.
Uber and TomTom will also work together to ensure map updates reflect real-world changes like new roads, turn restrictions, street closures, and more.
