The battle for food delivery in Europe is heating up! With various established firms such as Uber, Takeaway, Just Eat and others venturing into the food tech industry, this sector is sure to gain a lot of interest and investment. According to UBS, the global food delivery market is currently worth $35 billion and could grow to $365 billion by 2030.
Uber Eats, Sainsbury and its partnership!
In the latest development, Uber Eats is reportedly in early talks with Sainsbury, UKโs second-biggest grocer, about launching a grocery delivery service for customers. โWeโre currently speaking with a number of the major supermarkets around Europe,โ an Uber spokesman said reportedly.
Furthermore, the Uber Eats is planning to expand beyond food delivery as well, as they are reportedly in talks with Unilever and Diageo for a tie-up. Earlier this year, Uber Eats signed a similar deal with Australian supermarket Coles as well to deliver its ready-made meals, dairy, fruit and breakfast cereals to shoppers.
A few days back, Sainsbury announced a collaboration with Deliveroo to deliver hotly baked pizza to homes in four British cities. Sainsburyโs spokesman said, โWe talk to many companies about potential partnerships that could help our customers access convenient and affordable products.โ
A wave of partnerships!ย
This move comes as another news amid a wave of a partnership between grocery retailers with food delivery firms.
Partnership #1
To reiterate, Amsterdam-based Takeaway and U.K.-based Just Eat announced a mega-merger some time back to take on Deliveroo and Uber Eats in Europe. Named as Just Eat Takeaway, this merger is enormous from the operation perspective as the two could combine resources to scale better and take on its rivals.
Under the U.K. merger rules, both sides have until August 24 to get final approval from investors to get the deal signed. If the agreement is signed, Jitse Groen, currently CEO of Takeaway.com, will assume the role of CEO of the Combined Group.
Partnership #2
Walmart-owned Asda has signed a partnership with Just Eat earlier this month to offer the U.K customers the chance to order groceries that would be delivered to their home in just 30 minutes.
Partnership #3 and #4
Thirdly, the online grocer Ocado has partnered with Marks & Spencer Group Plc to deliver groceries. Furthermore, Waitrose has recently signed an agreement with Today Development Partners to develop a ยฃ1 billion online grocery business as well.
With our lives getting busier, new ways of ordering food online are being embraced by many across the world. In addition to it, online food delivery also provides variety of benefits to foodservice providers as well. Be it automated delivery services or eco-friendly options on offer; there is much more to come in the future. What do you think? Do let us know in the comment section below!
