8 startups from Delft that look promising in 2018

Lately, we have heard the word “Startups” quite often right from the graduate students to the vexed employee. To be honest, in the recent years, the Delft startup ecosystem has evolved so much considering the development and hype. Some business became brands successfully since they connected with the consumers in one or other way.

Having said that, there is some very good work happening at some of the startups, which give rise to tremendous growth. In general, startups are driven by factors including availability of funding, evolving technology space and much more. Today, in this article, we are going to have a look at a few startups from Delft that look most promising to establish themselves in the upcoming days. Do give it a read.

#1 Nightbalance

Founded in 2009, Nightbalance developed Sleep Position Trainer, an easy to use yet highly advanced device to prevent positional obstructive sleep apnea. Last year, the Dutch National Health Care Institute (ZIN) issued a positive recommendation to include its sleep apnea therapy for reimbursement.

This move from the government allows the health care insurers in the Netherlands to offer all Dutch citizens suffering from POSA the SPT (Sleep Position Trainer) device as part of the basic insurance plan. Currently, the SPT is being sold in 11 countries in Europe. The Nightbalance is supported by world-renowned scientists and clinicians in its medical advisory board.

The MAB consists of Prof. Dr. de Vries (The Netherlands), Dr. White (USA), Dr. Heinzer (Swiss) and Dr. Pepin (France).

#2 Bolt Mobility

Bolt Mobility, the Dutch automotive startup, who calls themselves the Tesla of e-scooters, works on its ambitious electric AppScooter. It is environmental friendly, more reasonable than the regular scooter and has some super cool functional design built into it. The Appscooter comes with a 7-inch touchscreen with handlebar controls and runs Android apps in its cockpit.

The Appscooter accelerates from 0 to 45km/h in 3.3 sec. and goes up to 400km with the modular electric drivetrain. The AppScooter comes with GPS, 4G, and electronically controlled locks and will have a lifespan of 80,000km.

#3 Mobbr Crowd Payments

Mobbr Crowd Payments is the first across the globe to announce crowd payments platform that offers several benefits for crowd-sourced labor. It has a unique feature called “social salary” that distributes the money to laborers online with a single click, which in turn allows the professionals to be paid easily.

This platform lets the workers work from anywhere and no longer have to work from the office with confined space. Mobbr is created exclusively for the online labor, where it also works as a full-fledged e-wallet and payment solution.

Furthermore, the platform offers its payment button free to businesses and platforms, however, it charges a monthly transaction fee to the professionals who receive money. The transaction fee is capped at €9 euros or 5 percent per month.

#4 Roadmap

Recently, Roadmap has raised a Series A round of €4 million led by Newion Investments and the Roadmap founders. t is an all-in-one travel app that goes out of the way to make the business travel experience a seamless one. The Roadmap was founded by CEO Jeroen van Velzen, CCO Koen Bavinck, and COO Markus Emmer in April 2015, in an attempt to make a major change in the corporate travel industry which is 10 years behind and on enhancing the travel experience for business travelers.

This app acts as the much-needed tool (Intuitive Interface) in which all the corporate travel suppliers will be assisting the enterprises to manage their travel program better. In fact, the Roadmap platform is connected to travel agencies and industry suppliers across the globe to guide employees by sorting out all the relevant details in one, an easily readable content on the app.

#5 Sense glove

Currently, the technologies like Virtual reality and Augmented Reality let us experience the fantasy world but with limited interactions. In an attempt to carry out the interaction to next level, the Netherlands-based company Sense Glove has come up with a 3D-printed prototype for a VR glove a.k.a. Sense glove that provides the natural interaction with both VR and AR, where users can literally feel and touch.

According to the company, the Sense Glove translates any motion of the hand into a digital equivalent (the visual cue) and allows you feel the shape, density, and texture of the virtual object (the physical cue). This is one of the super cool creation we’ve seen so far.

#6 Inkless

The graduates from the Delft University of Technology developed Inkless technology that would allow black and white printing without any cartridges or toners on all paper types at any time. The Inkless embraces an approach called controlled burning, or carbonization, where it produces the right amount of heat on paper which in turn produces lasting deep black marks.

The Inkless printers coming to market can cause a significant impact on reducing this wastage consequently saving lots of money as well. In addition to it, this will be a one-time investment and there will be no recurring cost since it doesn’t need any refills like cartridge or toners. Currently, they are in talks with multiple printing companies discussing about commencing the sales of their product.

They are also preparing for the next investment round around the end of 2018, which is expected to be financed by strategic partners or Venture Capitalists.

#7 Hardt

Founded in 2016, the Delft-based Hardt designs and develops a tube train that travels through a vacuum tube at speeds up to 1200 km/hr. Not long ago, Hardt has collaborated with BAM to build first hyperloop test facility in Europe. Recently, they have raised an amount of €1.25M in a new financing round with several investors involved in the investment round.

According to Tim Houter, co-founder, and CEO, they want to construct the world’s first high-speed hyperloop test facility in the Netherlands.

#8 Physee

Founded in 2014, Physee Technologies was listed among 30 early stage technology pioneers for 2017 and selected by the World Economic Forum for their potential to change the world. This company is developing a transparent and colorless electricity-generating window called PowerWindow.

The first installation of Physee’s PowerWindows happened in Eindhoven around June, in the south of the Netherlands. It’s worth mentioning here the Powerwindow consists of solar cells around the edges at a precise angle, that allows the solar light to be converted into electricity. In addition to that, the company is also working on next-gen tech called as PowerWindows that is expected to triple the efficiency as well.

In fact, to improve the efficiency, the PowerWindow surface is coated with a unique material that eventually transforms the incoming light into the near-infrared light and then transfers it to the solar cells in the edges of the windows.
