The way the question is usually put contains its own answer. Older people need to adapt, which locates the problem inside them and makes everything that follows a matter of willingness. Two separate lines of research complicate that, and neither is about older people being better at technology than the stereotype suggests.
One is about what older adults are actually doing when they decline to keep up. The other is about what the expectation itself does to them.
What shifting goals look like from outside
Laura Carstensen, Derek Isaacowitz and Susan Charles published Taking Time Seriously in American Psychologist in 1999, setting out socioemotional selectivity theory. The claim is that social goals are governed by how much time a person perceives ahead of them.
When the horizon looks open, people prioritise acquiring information and meeting new contacts, because both pay off later. When the horizon looks short, priorities move towards emotional quality in the present: fewer peripheral contacts, more investment in the relationships that already matter.
The authors assemble the evidence from several directions at once. Older adults weight the emotional qualities of potential social partners more heavily than younger adults when judging who to spend time with. They recall proportionately more emotional material from narratives. Their social networks shrink at the periphery while close ties hold. Older couples show better emotional control during conflict.
Those are four different measures pointing at a preference rather than a deficit.
Read through that lens, a lot of what gets filed as failure to adapt is a different allocation. Someone declining to learn a fifth messaging app is not necessarily struggling with it. They may be applying a rule about what is worth the time, and applying it consistently.
The part of the theory that makes it more than a flattering reframe is what happens when you hold age constant and vary the time horizon instead.
When younger participants were asked to imagine an imminent geographical move or a curtailed future, their social preferences shifted towards familiar partners in the same way older adults’ did. The authors also point to Hong Kong residents across age groups showing heightened preference for familiar relationships around the 1997 handover. If the pattern were about ageing itself, constraining a young person’s horizon should not reproduce it.
That does not make every case of avoidance a considered choice. It does mean you cannot read avoidance as incapacity without doing more work.
The expectation has a measurable cost
The second line of research asks what happens to people who are aware that everyone expects them to be bad at this.
Ana Mariano and colleagues published a longitudinal study in Frontiers in Psychology in 2020 called Too Old for Computers?. They followed 86 community-dwelling older adults, average age 78, and measured both stereotype threat, meaning anxiety about confirming the stereotype of age-related technological incompetence, and actual computer use, at two points a year and a half apart.
Stereotype threat at the first measurement predicted lower computer use at the second, with a standardised coefficient of -0.21. Computer use at the first measurement did not predict stereotype threat later, at essentially zero.
The asymmetry is the finding. Both variables were measured the same way at both times, so if the relationship ran the other way, from struggling with computers to feeling anxious about the stereotype, the analysis had every opportunity to show it. It did not, and the coefficient in that direction was almost exactly zero rather than merely non-significant.
What that suggests is a loop with a direction: the expectation of incompetence contributes to withdrawal, and the withdrawal then looks like evidence for the expectation.
What that study cannot carry
It is one study, not settled consensus, and it is small.
Eighty-six people is a modest sample for a cross-lagged model. They were recruited from senior centres in Lisbon, which is a convenience sample and not a cross-section of anything. Computer use was self-reported rather than measured, and self-reported behaviour is a soft instrument. The authors also note they looked only at desktop and laptop use, because tablet adoption in the sample was too low to model, which means the study could not see technology substitution: someone who moved from a laptop to a tablet would register in this design as using computers less.
None of that is hidden, and the authors list all of it themselves, which is worth more than it sounds. A paper that names the substitution problem it could not rule out is easier to trust than one that does not raise it.
So the honest statement is that a small longitudinal study found a directional relationship consistent with a mechanism that has been demonstrated more broadly in other domains, and that it wants replication at scale before anyone leans on the coefficient.
Where the burden actually sits
We would put one view here, briefly, because the research supports the shape of it rather than the whole of it.
If part of what looks like failure to adapt is a rational allocation of remaining time, and another part is a self-reinforcing response to being told you cannot do this, then the framing that treats adaptation as a personal duty is doing some of the damage it claims to diagnose. Advice aimed at making older people try harder is aimed at the wrong variable in at least two of the mechanisms described above.
The design question sits alongside this and is not something either paper measured, so we will not pretend it is a finding. Interfaces change for reasons that have nothing to do with users, services move online before their users move online, and the cost of both lands unevenly. That is an argument, not a result.
What the research does support is narrower and more useful than a slogan about staying current. Withdrawal from a technology is not by itself evidence of inability. The people most likely to withdraw are the ones who have absorbed the expectation that they will fail. And a shortening time horizon changes what is worth learning in ways that would look identical in a thirty-year-old facing the same constraint.
The last of those is the one worth sitting with, because it is the one that does not treat older people as a separate category of person at all.
