With unique laser-based 5G technology, this Dutch startup aims to revolutionise the future of communication

Eindhoven, the birthplace of Philips electronics is one of the busiest cities with a thriving tech scene. The city of light is gaining attention from major Dutch tech players. In fact, the growing startup community is spearheaded by Brainport Eindhoven, a space created by the municipality to stimulate tech and design collaborations.

Groundbreaking laser-based 5G technology!

Having said that, today, during the Beyond tech conference, HighTechXL-based deep-tech venture Aircision announced its readiness to test its groundbreaking laser-based 5G communications technology.

“Aircision’s competitive advantage is adapting laser technology to create a more intense, more focused technique for transmitting a 10 gigabits-per-second signal optically through the air,” said Aircision CTO John Reid, Ph.D.

Will replace conventional cables and fibre optics!

Notably, this tech that will replace conventional cables and fiber optics in strategic parts of building a super-fast communications networks. The test will beam data between buildings on High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

“Our system is way more resistant to atmospheric effects than existing FSO technologies,” said Luis Oliveira, Aircision’s CEO.

Used to pioneer new use cases

According to the company, this will be the world’s first test of Free Space Optics (FSO) as a viable link for future 5G networks. It has great potential for high-bandwidth data transmission as well.

Leading players such as VodafoneZiggo, Ericsson, High Tech Campus Eindhoven, PSV and Effenaar are participating in the project. The Eindhoven 5G network will be used to pioneer new use cases developed by industry giants as well as fast-growing SMEs.

Luis Oliveira, added, “In addition, our laser beam-based technology is cheaper and easier to implement than building expensive physical infrastructure. Our technology offers great potential for FSO in overcoming bottlenecks that have hindered its application in the past such as limits on distance, latency and ‘5×9’ reliability.”

“We’re not only rolling out the first 5G network in Eindhoven, but we’re also creating a key piece of technology crucial to bringing high-bandwidth communications to rural areas around the globe,” HighTechXL’s CEO Guus Frericks added. “In addition, FSO can be a permanent solution for remote areas of the world where building out fibre optics networks is too expensive. Taking part in this 5G project is just a start”.
