Based out of Helsinki VC firm Voima Ventures has recently announced a multi-stage fund of €50 million to invest in deep-tech startups across the Nordics and Baltics. The main investors in the fund are VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the European Investment Fund (EIF).

Research and scientific background!

Founded by Inka Mero, and Mikko Kumpulainen, Voima Ventures helps founders to accelerate the growth of deep technology ventures to global markets. The VC firm focuses on startups originating from a research and scientific background in the Nordics and Baltics.

Deeptech startups!

In fact, Deep tech startups are at the forefront of science-driven innovation and aim to address the biggest challenges humanity faces. Notably, Voima Ventures’ portfolio includes 20 deep tech companies, all spin-offs from VTT.

“While deep tech investments in 2018 were up 6.6 times compared to the level of investments in 2013, deep tech still attracts only 20 percent of the total capital invested in Europe. Here in the Nordics, the number is even lower,” commented Inka Mero, founder and managing partner at Voima Ventures.

Investing in various verticals!

With this fund, the VC firm is planning to make 25 to 30 investment ranging from pre-seed of €150,000 to €500,000 to Series A and B of up to €2 million, with a focus on verticals including medical technologies and life sciences, IoT, electronics, robotics and AI. With this move, the company aims to bridge the gap between the Nordic tech scene and the scientific community.

Mero added, “As the largest global challenges require a combination of scientific innovation, entrepreneurship and capital, we strongly believe the next generation of ground-shaking companies will come from the field of deep tech,”
