In the current lifestyle, mental illness is one of the major problems across the world. There are reports that almost 25% of the world population is affected by some sort of mental illness. This is where London-based Spill, a therapy startup comes to play. It offers massage-based therapy to help increase emotional intelligence and enhance their ability to face the challenges in their life.
Raises €760k seed funding
Founded in 2018 by Calvin Benton and Gavin Dhesi, this London-based startup has recently secured €760k seed funding from Passion Capital and Seedcamp along with angel investors such as Julian Callede, the founder of Made.com and Jack Tang, the co-founder of Urban.
The healthtech startup will use this capital to grow its engineering team, drive potential expansion into academic institutions and universities and for the further development of its core offerings aimed at organisations.
Let users connect with counsellors
Spill was a result of the co-founders’ frustrations due to the barriers to both the private- and public-sector mental wellness. In the UK, those who are undergoing a rough patch or looking out for support had to wait for months to visit a counsellor or pay a hefty fee of over €70 per session to visit a private counsellor.
The Spill app will let users connect with counsellors registered with BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) or equivalent psychotherapists and counsellors using anonymous written therapeutic communication. The professionals can provide discreet, private, accessible, convenient and flexible support to these troubled individuals.
The app is incorporated into progressive organisations ranging from small startups to fast-growing companies like Rightmove and Monzo. Even corporations such as Hargreaves Lansdown uses this app. The ultimate aim of this startup is to make therapy and counselling available at the workplace.
“Spill is the resource that we wished we had during our own challenging times,” said co-founder Calvin Benton. “It’s designed to be used more like a consumer app rather than a medical one, so that individuals won’t be embarrassed to have it on their home screens helping to reduce any stigma.”
“We’re extremely proud to work with the Spill team because we genuinely believe that people are what differentiate and distinguish great companies,” said Eileen Burbidge of Passion Capital. “We always encourage our portfolio companies to invest in their people, and we believe that Spill is an ideal way for all companies and workplaces to do this for the benefit of their employees’ well-being, executive coaching or simply improving interpersonal communication skills and team dynamics.”
“Our aim is to make ‘Spilling’ about your feelings a commonplace habit, regardless of whether people are doing it to approach challenges at work, overcome a life problem, navigate the in’s and out’s of a relationship, or just become a better and more self-aware human overall,” added co-founder Gavin Dhesi.
