Which explains why it’s such a competitive industry when it comes to landing your dream job. Getting a great opportunity at a startup is about more than luck. There are things you can do to stand out as a candidate, which may help you nail the interview process and ultimately get you the job of your dreams.

So, what can you do to land a job in a tech startup?

Get Experience

If you are making the move into tech startups from a different industry, make sure you really dial up your experience as much as possible. Likewise, if this is your first jump into the world of employment, make sure to get as much relevant experience as possible. Don’t be afraid to take internships, or even shadow someone you respect within a tech startup. Learn as much as possible, all while bulking up your CV.

Check your brand

At the end of the day, you’re looking for a job in tech, so you should assume that the first thing that a potential employer will do is google you. Yep, seriously. Your personal brand will be super important, so make sure you clean house if necessary. Ensure there’s nothing about you online that would portray you in a negative light.

Network

Remember, a lot of the time, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. So many people land jobs in tech startups after meeting someone who helps them get a foot in the door. Make sure you’re making an effort to meet people who might be able to assist you. Look for networking opportunities and really put yourself out there.

Use Social Media

Much like networking in real life, use social media as a networking tool as much as possible. Connect with people on LinkedIn, engage in conversations and discussions on Twitter, put yourself out there, make a name for yourself.

Job Boards

Job boards are a great way to get live opportunities directly into your inbox – making your life so much easier as you look for a new role. There are so many great ones to sign up to, but we have to admit, our very own Silicon Canals Jobs is one of the best out there. It offers talent a new and more efficient way of hearing about job opportunities in the tech startup sphere.

Do Your Homework

Okay so you have landed an interview (go you!) – and now the preparations begin. In the realm of tech startups, knowledge is power. You should educate yourself on every element of the industry, and the company you’re interviewing with. Learn all the various trends, funding information and anything else that may be asked of you.

Be flexible

Startups develop fast so don’t accept a job unless you’re able to keep up with the pace. You might be hired for a specific role but six months down the line you could be doing something entirely different. If you want to get involved in this environment you need to be a hard worker who is willing to give it their all, even when completing less glamorous tasks.

Be passionate

If you really want to succeed in this fast-paced environment then you need to find a product that you believe in. Choose a company that aligns with your core values and find a team that you are passionate about. If you are not fully committed to the company and what they are trying to achieve then you will be miserable. Find a product that you believe will succeed and then do everything in your power to make that happen.

Keep up to date with some of the most exciting roles in the tech startup industry here, and good luck with your search!
